bio
The Rebel Spell are a DIY punk band based around community building and social change. They formed in 2002 and are situated in East Vancouver, Coast Salish Territories. The band represents a sort of beacon of hope within the underground music scene in Canada, as they have both inspired newer bands in how far DIY can take a band, and have also helped fill a void in a time of an a-political scene. Perhaps due to their catchy and melodic nature, mixed with the usual hardcore elements within punk, the band is one of few bands that are able to draw fans from across often divided and split scenes. The band has also made touring a sustainable project, year in, year out, with no compromises along the way and were also one of the first bands to make their music accessible, not through free digital downloads, but by offering 1000s of cds for 'pay what you like' prices. The band also released much of it's material through their own means, Clandestine Collective, before partnering up with Propagandhi's label G7 Welcoming Committee, Fire and Flames Music (Europe) and Rebel Time Records, although they still play a major role in booking tours and releasing new music.
Having toured Canada and the USA on many occasions, the band was able to finally make the trip to Europe in 2011 for a tour of Ireland, Holland, France and Germany. With 4 releases under their belt, the band has plans to continue touring, both in North America and Europe, and continue to write new music and take part in movements of social change.
